Inspired by her upbringing in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges of Melbourne, Hannah Phillips is a passionate flautist and animal lover exploring exciting intersections between music and nature. With a keen interest in the emerging field of zoomusicology, Hannah loves to explore nature-inspired sounds on various members of the flute family, including concert flute, piccolo, alto flute, ocarina, recorder, and tin whistles. She has performed on the flute for twelve years and in 2021 produced a concert program of almost exclusively birdsong-inspired pieces as part of her music performance studies at Monash University. Hannah is passionate about woodwind playing and also performs on upper saxophones and clarinet, hoping to one day produce an extended techniques guide for nature-inspired sounds on most instruments.
An active performer in her community, Hannah has been an active member of the Casey Philharmonic Orchestra since 2023 and the Knox Wind Symphony since its inauguration in 2017, including playing flute and piccolo in the latter ensemble at the 2018 and 2024 National Band Championships. She is also currently a member of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra playing on flutes.
During her time at Monash University, Hannah studied under low flutes specialist Peter Sheridan and performed with the Monash Academy Orchestra on flute and piccolo between 2020-2023. She was awarded joint winner of the 2022 Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance's Australian Music Prize in partnership with pianist Tristan Sumarna, and second place at the 2024 National Band Championship's Open Piccolo competition.
Previously, she was also a member of the Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra in 2022 and 2023, performed several Bach cantatas alongside Inventi Ensemble’s Melissa Doecke at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and sang as part of Eric Whitacre’s sixth virtual choir project, ‘Sing Gently’, in 2021. She now enjoys taking part in voluntary recording projects run by the Virtual Video Game Orchestra and creating new projects with friends.
In 2022, Hannah began performing in pit orchestras for community musicals and continues to play in various shows based in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Previous shows include:
- Into The Woods (Fl/Picc)
- The Little Mermaid Jr. (Fl/Picc/Alto.Fl)

- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Picc/Fl/Cl/A.Sax)
